Ghana’s President Given Guyana’s Highest National Honour

President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo arrives at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and is greeted by Guyana’s President David Granger and other officials.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tuesday June 11, 2019 – Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has been given Guyana’s highest national award – the Order of Excellence.

It was presented by President David Granger at a State luncheon today,
hours after Akufo-Addo touched down in the country for a two-day visit.

The Order of Excellence, which can be conferred on individuals of national
and international significance, was given to the Ghanaian leader in recognition
of his demonstrated commitment and dedication to the Commonwealth and the Organization
of African Unity, and for his unflinching support for the rights of developing
states.

President Granger described Akufo-Addo as a friend and brother of Guyana.

PRESIDENT OF GHANA AWARDED ORDER OF EXCELLENCE

President of Ghana Mr Nana Akufo-Addo has been conferred with Guyana’s National Award – the Order of Excellence. The Order of Excellence was established in 1970 and is only available to 25 living individuals and can be conferred on persons of national and international significance. Mr Akufo-Addo was presented with the award from Guyana in recognition of his demonstrated commitment to the Commonwealth, the organisation of West African states and for his unflinching support to the development of developing states. President Granger called Mr Akufo-Addo a friend and brother of Guyana.

Earlier in the day, President Akufo-Addo paid tribute to the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement and Kofi, who led the ‘Great Rebellion’ of 1763, with floral tributes at the Non-Aligned and 1763 Monuments, in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown.

The monument also commemorates the 1972 Conference (August 8-11) of
Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned countries, the first of its kind to be held in
Guyana.

Following the floral tribute at the Non-Aligned Monument at Company Path
Gardens, President Akufo-Addo was then escorted to the 1763 Monument, Square of
the Revolution, Brickdam, where he was received by Chairman of the
International Decade for People of African Descent, Vincent Alexander.

The Ghanaian head of state laid a floral tribute at the monument which was built to commemorate the 1763 revolt, also known as the ‘Great Rebellion’, which occurred on Plantations in the Berbice River.
