Tom Friedman appeared on Morning Joe today, and he had some pointed words for Rex Tillerson following the latest news about why the secretary of state reportedly called President Trump a “moron.”
The New York Times writer was on to discuss North Korea’s impact on international diplomacy, though the conversation eventually moved on to Trump’s feud with Bob Corker. The outgoing Republican senator recently worried that Trump is moving America towards World War III, and Friedman seemed to compound on that by slamming “the complete and utter incoherence of this Trump foreign policy.”
Joe Scarborough proceeded to note the implications of the fact that none of Corker’s Republican senate colleagues have come out to contradict his opinions about Trump. The Morning Joe host also wondered if Republicans should assemble a coalition to “make certain demands of this erratic president” and determine whether Corker is right or wrong.
Here’s what Friedman had to say about that:
“I look at the whole Rex Tillerson affair…I think he’s the weakest secretary of state we’ve had in the post-war area. He’s working for the worst foreign policy president in the post-war era, and in fairness to both of them, at the worst time to conduct foreign policy in the post-war era. Yet I say of Tillerson, ‘god I hope he doesn’t leave.’ We do know he had the courage to call this guy out as a moron and we do know at least he has instincts more in line with a sobriety than who knows the next person the president could bring in.”
