President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a press conference at Élysées Palace as the two leaders prepare to take part in Bastille Day celebrations.
The press conference will begin at 12:25 p.m. EST.
Following the state arrival ceremony at Les Invalides, Trump and Macron will meet for a discussion about counter-terrorism, economics, and other subjects pertaining to the recent G20 Summit. The bilateral meeting will be followed by a press event before the two leaders head out to observe the celebrations.
It is possible Trump will face questions about how his son and campaign staff met with a Russian lawyer last year with the understanding that the Kremlin wanted to give them sensitive information about Hillary Clinton. The issue placed the White House under renewed pressure over Russia’s election interference, and it has invited new questions about whether people in the president’s orbit colluded with a foreign power to help him win.
Trump might also face questions about how he and Macron have several major differences in terms of policy. Macron does not share Trump’s hard line on immigration, and he mocked his American counterpart over the decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord.
Even though Trump has insisted otherwise, he seemed to support Marine Le Pen before Macron defeated her in the French presidential election. Trump and Macron have also had a couple of dust-ups during previous encounters with each other.
