Xi Alpha Omega Collaborates with Local Community Group to Promote Homebuyer’s Education

Houston, TX — Xi Alpha Omega’s (XAO) Family Strengthening Committee, chaired by Cerendy Sias, in partnership with Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation (FWCRC), recently hosted a Homebuyer’s Education Class. FWCRC is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit Texas corporation committed to the revitalization of the Fifth Ward Community in Houston, which includes homebuyer education and counseling, credit counseling, delinquency or foreclosure prevention counseling, and home maintenance training, as well as the development of single family homes, apartments, and commercial space. The event, under the leadership of president, Tracey Lewis, was held in the Fifth Ward Business and Financial Center in Houston. The class provided information to families on the process of purchasing and maintaining a home, as well as provided the educational requirement for qualified applicants to receive down payment and/or closing costs assistance. Class participants were welcomed by FWCRC staff member, Krystal Hasselmeier, followed by a Managing Your Money session conducted by Evelyn Randle with Karn Kay Realty. Other sessions included: Understanding Credit, Obtaining a Mortgage, Readiness and Shopping for a Home, and Protecting your Investment, followed by an open forum which allowed for a discussion and question period. XAO members provided breakfast for class participants and coupon holders with coupons to encourage money management and budget tips during and after the purchase of their new home. Additionally, two participants were selected to receive Walmart gifts cards donated by XAO to assist in decorating their new home.
