It’s a sunny, sparkling day in Ibiza (Eivissa in local Catalan), right at the start of the Spanish island’s renowned party season that runs from June to September. However, it may be hard to tear myself away from my plush room and private outdoor patio with hot tub at the Ibiza Gran Hotel, which has been billed as Ibiza Town’s only five-star luxury property. Hard it is, but I’ve been looking forward to getting the lay of the land and time’s a-wasting.
Known for such famous night spots as Pacha and Lío—where doors open as late as midnight and close only when daylight is nigh—and a majestic 16th Century cathedral, bars, and restaurants nestled in the steep cobblestone streets of Old Town (Dalt Vila), Ibiza is at its liveliest when the sun goes down.
In contrast, daytime is quiet time. Old Town is open for leisurely sightseeing, as are local restaurants like Es Boldado, which serves up tasty seafood bites with a stellar backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea’s picturesque blues.
Today, however, is all about exploring Ibiza’s curving, scenic routes with a show-stopping sidekick—the new Lexus LC 500 Coupe (MSRP $92,000). Cruising along in the sleek, swift car (471-hp, V8 engine) to music curated by producer extraordinaire Mark Ronson (“Uptown Funk”) is, surprisingly, just the beginning of the day’s experiences.
Slowing near a road crew doing repairs, I’m pulled over by a stern policeman. Just as I get ready to break out my rudimentary high-school Spanish, the road crew breaks into an incredible dance and music routine that includes whirlwind flips, fast moves, and drumming on the “equipment.” Later, I’ll park at stunning, secluded Cala Carbo Beach and colorfully dressed beachgoers will transform into a seriously upbeat and inviting flash mob.
What’s going on? It’s the official launch of the stylish LC. In keeping with the brand’s focus on innovative engineering and design, and their new tagline of “Experience Amazing,” this rollout targets affluent, adventurous consumers and includes Make Your Mark, an online collaboration with Ronson that runs through May 2018. Make Your Mark draws viewers into a layered immersive experience that culminates with the creation of their own musical track.
For now, though, I’m tapping my fingers to the music, sinking back into the LC’s leather-trimmed sports seat (there are fans inside the seat backs that circulate air, y’all!), and getting ready to continue my journey along the Ibizan coast. This? Is amazing!
