Four in double figures as @KYSUMBB beats Benedict


COLUMBIA, SC –  Four players reached double figures as the Kentucky State University men’s basketball team defeated Benedict College, 86-76, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Monday. (Post Game Interviews)

Senior Kevin Hayes (Detroit, MI) finished with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while senior Ditalion Battle (Cincinnati, OH) added 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting with a team-high four assists. Senior Austin Sherrell (Detroit, MI) contributed 17 points and five rebounds.

Junior DeAndre Wynn (Miami, FL) came off the bench to post his first career double-double, scoring 10 points with 10 rebounds.

Five different players scored during a 13-2 run midway through the first half to take the game’s double digit lead. Benedict went on a mini run to get the lead down to six, but as quickly as the Tigers got close, the ‘Breds rebuilt their lead.

The lead stayed in double figures for the majority of the second half, but Benedict never really challenged.

Kentucky State shot a season-best 54.2 percent (32-of-59) from the field, including a robust 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the second half. It marks the third time this year, all victories, that the Thorobreds connected on more than half their shots. It is also the third time this season, once again all wins, KSU distributed out 15 or more assists.

Kentucky State (6-7 overall, 4-3 SIAC) travels to Augusta, GA to face Paine College (2-9 overall, 1-3 SIAC) 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Lions earned their first SIAC win of the season Monday, beating Central State, 62-61.
