The Kentucky State University men’s basketball team is looking for their first three-game winning streak of the season as the Thorobreds travel to Paine College 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

THE TEAMS: Kentucky State (6-7 overall, 4-3 SIAC) moved to over .500 in conference play with Monday’s win over Benedict, and is now looking to even its overall record.

Paine (2-9 overall, 1-4 SIAC) is coming off its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season, beating Central State 62-61 Monday.

THE COACHES: Jamaal Jackson is in his third season at the helm of his alma mater. The Thorobreds are 24-42 under Jackson. Kentucky State has been one of the top scoring teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference under Jackson. He came to KSU following a stint at Bluefield State College, where he led them to increased win totals in every season. The same can be said about his tenure at Stillman, where the Tigers improved upon their win totals.

Daryl Stinson is in his second season as the head coach, and his fourth season with the men’s basketball program.

THE PLAYERS: Senior Kevin Hayes is one of the top scorers in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and has scored at least 20 points in three of the last four games. He has reached the scoring landmark seven times as he is averaging 19.6 points per contest.

Senior guard Ditalion Battle has found his scoring stroke over the last six games, averaging 21.5 points to boost his scoring average by almost five points. He leads the ‘Breds with 42 assists and is second on the team in scoring and rebounding with 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Senior Austin Sherrell is finding his rhythm again after missing a pair of games and playing sparingly in another two contest while working his way back. Sherrell has scored 31 points in the last two games, and is the team’s leading rebounder on the season with 5.1 boards.

Sophomore forward Cameron Gaines has reached double figures in all but two games for the Lions, and is leading the team with 14.4 points per contest. He is the lone Paine player averaging at least 10 points.

Junior guard Charles Moore, who is averaging 7.0 points, is coming off a 20-point effort in Monday’s one-point victory over Central State.
