Lady Marauders fall short in 65-56 loss to Wayne State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Lady Marauders dropped their third straight game, falling to the Wayne State Warriors, 65-56, on Tuesday night.

The loss drops the Lady Marauders to 3-7 overall. Wayne State improved to 5-5 on the season.

The Warriors used an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter on top 20-12. CSU climbed back into the game by holding WSU scoreless through the first five minutes of the second period. CSU converted 8 of 14 shot attempts in the second quarter to take a 29-25 halftime lead.

Wayne State began to find its range in the second half as guard Alexis Miller knocked down back-to-back three pointers. Wayne State went on to outscore CSU, 21-15, in the third en route to a 46-44 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Long distance makes from Miller and Natassja Chambers put the Warriors up, 54-46, at the 8:27 mark of the fourth quarter. CSU remained within striking distance. A jumper by Aaryn Evans cut the WSU lead to four with 1:49 to play but that would be the last basket CSU managed as the team went 0 of 2 from the field with two turnovers down the stretch.

Led by Miller, Wayne State converted 8 of 17 three-point attempts while CSU was just 4 for 15 from beyond the arc.

Miller led WSU offensively with 18 points and six assists. Chambers contributed 14 points off the bench.

Jaeda Davis led CSU with a game-high 19 points. Despite being one of the smaller players on the floor, Davis also tallied a career-high three blocks. Evans finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Marauders resume conference play at home this Saturday against Clark Atlanta.

Tuesday was the first home game for CSU since Nov. 11.

Despite the loss to Wayne State, CSU remains ahead in the all-time series, 9-7.

CSU’s leading scorer Takyra Gilbert was held scoreless in Tuesday night’s loss.

Saturday’s game against Clark Atlanta is a rematch of last year’s SIAC Championship.
