Lady Tigers Shut Down Central State, 69-49

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers held Central State to just 18.5 percent shooting and claimed a 69-49 victory on Wednesday night in an SIAC basketball contest.

Benedict remains undefeated in conference action, moving to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the SIAC. Central State falls to 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the SIAC.

Ay’Anna Bey continued her strong play with her eighth double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, her second-highest total of the season. Ayanna Armstead added 15 points, while Jasmine Gholson hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points.

Central State struggled from the floor, connecting on just 12 of 65 field-goal attempts. Benedict was there to scoop up the missed shots, out-rebounding the Lady Marauders 57-31.

Central State had a 17-13 lead early in the second quarter, but Benedict scored the next 10 points and finished the first half with a 23-20 lead. The Lady Tigers used a 12-1 run in the third quarter to build a 39-27 lead and had a 45-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Benedict takes to the road for a pair of games, starting with a trip to Tuskegee on Saturday before traveling to Miles on Monday. The next home game will be Saturday, Jan. 12 against Clark Atlanta at 1 p.m.
