Lady Tigers Sweep Claflin, 3-0


COLUMBIA, S.C. – V’Aira Harris had 12 kills and Mariah Cobbin served up a career-high six aces to help lead the Benedict College Lady Tigers to a 3-0 sweep over rival Claflin University on Tuesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Benedict took the match 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 to improve to 12-8 on the season. Claflin falls to 4-10 overall.

Benedict registered 13 aces in the match, with Cobbin leading the way with six.

Ashleigh Reeves posted a double-double with 16 assists and a team-high 13 digs.

Benedict used a 7-0 run in the first set to take a 9-4 lead. When Claflin cut the lead to 14-13, Benedict scored the next three points, with Reeves serving up an ace. An ace by Harris gave Benedict a 21-15 lead. A kill by Taylor Stephens closed out the first set.

Claflin started out the second set with a 3-1 lead, but the Lady Tigers went on an eight-point run behind Cobbin’s serving. She closed out the run with a service ace. Benedict later outscored the Lady Panthers 9-2 to take an 18-6 lead. Benedict closed out the second set with back-to-back aces by Cobbin.

Cobbin served for a 7-0 Benedict run in the third set for a 19-10 lead. Cobbin had one ace in that span.

Benedict is back in action on Friday, with a home match against Clark Atlanta. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
